Every year since 1977, Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society has kicked off the Christmas season with its annual Candlelight Tours of some of Suffolk's most beautiful and historic homes. Tours have been held in various neighborhoods of "old" Suffolk as well as in Suffolk's outlying communities of Chuckatuck, Crttenden, Driver, Eclipse, Everets, Holland, Somerton, and Whaleyville.

With whole neighborhoods being revitalized in the old City, the Society is now able to offer true walking tours. These neighborhoods have taken on new life as tenements with absentee landlords have been replaced by proud owner occupants.

This year's tour, scheduled for December 6 & 7, 2008, will be on and near Linden Avenue. This neighborhood was part of the westward expansion of a busy, growing town of Suffolk in the early 20th century.

The annual Candlelight Tour raises funds for Historical Society projects, but better than that, it really teaches history while fostering a sense of community for our citizens.
