On the morning of September 13, 2008, a full-sized replica of Captain John Smith's "shallop" will sail up the Nansemond River just as Smith himself did 400 years ago in September of 1608. Smith made two exploratory voyages in the summer of 1608, up and down the Chesapeake Bay and into the James River's tributaries. The visit of the shallop replica will be a part of A Taste of Suffolk, sponsored by the City of Suffolk and supported by Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society. As part of the day's activities, Society members in period costume will be strolling the streets and answering questions about Suffolk's history as music plays and food and fun are available in abundance. Suffolk's local communities will present displays, and there will be a Book and Author Day at the Seaboard Railroad Station where authors of Suffolk histories will be on hand for discussions and book signing. This promises to be an exciting day in the life of Suffolk!
